This kid inspires me

In India, many road side tea stalls have a kid working there.

And, whenever you reach out to that kid asking about his education, you will get a definitive answer that his family’s financial situation is dire or he himself is the sole earner of the family.

I also found a kid like that working on a stall I regularly visit. His family is a total wreck. His father died due to liver failure (you can probably guess why), his elder brothers left the family years ago to find a better life in another city and his mother is too weak to work after several pregnancies and miscarriages.

Now, at the age of 9, he is the sole earner of the family, responsible for feeding his mother and two younger siblings. He earns 4000 rupees per month, which he thinks is enough for his family to survive.

But, no matter how bad your situation is, addictions can make it even worse. For the past several months, I had found him hooked to his new smartphone. Turns out he was saving to buy that phone for almost a year.

One day, I asked him in a casually-

Hey, no messages to check on your phone today?

Nopes, I don’t own that phone now, I sold it.

Why? Planning to buy a new one?

No sir, I don’t want it anymore. It was wasting my time. Also, what would I do when I would need some money urgently, in the future. Gotta have some saving.

Of all the probable answers in the world, I was not expecting this one at all. The kid left me speechless. If we can keep track of our addictions before they engulf us then we can save ourselves from a lot of hardship in life.

These days his new habit is getting funky haircuts. Its a cheap habit and it doesn’t cost him time.
